How to Support a Preteen as a Mom

As Village Sis Doula enters the chapter of supporting her preteen, she wanted to share some insight gained to assist with parenting during the preteen chapter. Supporting your preteen can be a rewarding and challenging experience. As they navigate the transition from childhood to adolescence, they need guidance, understanding, and support. Here are some ways you can be there for your preteen:

Establish Open Communication

  • Encourage Conversation: Create an environment where your preteen feels comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings. Ask open-ended questions and be an attentive listener.

  • Be Approachable: Let them know they can come to you with anything, big or small, without fear of judgment or punishment.

Foster Independence

  • Encourage Decision-Making: Allow your preteen to make choices about their clothes, hobbies, and friendships. This helps them develop a sense of autonomy.

  • Teach Responsibility: Assign age-appropriate chores and tasks to help them learn accountability and time management.

Provide Emotional Support

  • Validate Their Feelings: Acknowledge their emotions and let them know it's okay to feel a range of emotions.

  • Be Patient and Understanding: Puberty brings a lot of changes, and it's important to be patient with any mood swings or changes in behavior.

Guide Them Through Challenges

  • Discuss Peer Pressure: Talk about the importance of staying true to themselves and making choices that align with their values.

  • Help with Problem-Solving: Teach them how to approach problems logically and consider the consequences of different actions.

Encourage Healthy Habits

  • Promote Physical Activity: Encourage participation in sports or other physical activities to help them stay active and healthy.

  • Model Healthy Eating: Provide nutritious meals and snacks, and involve them in meal planning and preparation.

Support Academic Growth

  • Create a Study Environment: Set up a quiet, organized space for homework and study.

  • Celebrate Achievements: Praise their efforts and accomplishments, both big and small, to boost their confidence.

Build a Strong Relationship

  • Spend Quality Time Together: Engage in activities you both enjoy, like cooking, hiking, or watching movies.

  • Share Your Experiences: Tell stories from your own preteen years to relate to their experiences and show empathy.

By focusing on open communication, fostering independence, providing emotional support, and encouraging healthy habits, you can help your preteen navigate this pivotal stage in their life with confidence and resilience.
